Nonverbal Autism Tips For The Season

My middle son Jaiden is now 14 with epilepsy, level 3 autism and an intellectual disability. He is nonverbal and has pica which is eating non edible food items on the daily. When I say nonverbal, for Jaiden this means he is unable to have back and forth conversation, has what’s called echolalia where he repeats words and phrases and also has a tendency to scream high pitch screams most days.

Jaiden doesn’t speak in sentences of more than 3 words. When he does speak in sentences, it is random sentences out of the blue when he is extremely excited and that happens about 3-4 times a year. The way that we communicate with him through out our days and how over the years we have built a relationship with him is through several different ways.

  • Find out what your child likes
  • Be straightforward with your language
  • Remove overwhelming stimuli
  • Use nonverbal communication like the picture exchange system, sign language, iPad with communication apps

These are some things that I have used with Jaiden over the years and I hope some of these things fe you will research for yourself and child to see what fits for you.
