Avoiding Burnout

“I am burnt out, tired and feel far from God,” I admitted a few years back to my husband Kevin. One of the greatest mistakes of being a Christian is to think that because you believe in God, you are close to God. It’s all about investing in a relationship with God and spending time reading and studying the Bible.

If you’re a parent that has a child with autism, I’m especially writing to you. But whatever your work is and however you serve God, you too can be vulnerable to burnout. If you feel tired mentally, physically, and spiritually a nap won’t help it. I know it’s extremely hard when your trying to be well in all of these areas and faced with helping your child cope through their challenges. The stress is real and it starts to take a toll on your whole life.

In my latest book project, I will be teaching that the real culprit of burnout is over parenting, over working, obsessive and controlling ways, lack of care to ourselves and a lack of relationship with God. I will explain how all of these things and more will crowd out a loving relationship with your family and a close relationship with God and how you can have a peaceful life in the midst of it all. It can happen to any of us in our families, jobs, and church service.

We need to regularly say NO to the stressful demands of our lives in order to say YES to enjoying a peaceful and restful relationship with God. In addition to blessing us, it will bless God, our families and the people all around us.

Thanks for being part of our journey. Because I deeply believe our kids need us all at our best right now, serving God and loving others with everything we got.
